Deep Cut Orchid Society will host annual show
Thousands of orchids of all colors, sizes and shapes will be featured at Deep Cut Orchid Society’s 15th annual orchid show to be held from Feb. 9-12 at the Dearborn Farm Market, Route 35, Holmdel. Admission and parking are free. Food will be available.
Show hours are Thursday from 1-6 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The show is sponsored by Deep Cut Orchid Society, a nonprofit organization devoted to the growing of orchids and to education about orchids.
With more than 25,000 named species, orchids are the most diverse flower on earth. There are also more than 250,000 hybrids. New strains are being developed all the time, according to a press release.
There will be exhibits from growers all over the eastern United States and vendors from all over the country, including Hawaii.
Certified American Orchid Society judges will select the best of the best on Thursday.
Faye Arnett, Deep Cut Orchid Society president and show co-chair, said, “No place else will you see such beautiful flowers in the middle of winter. Hundreds of flowers. Colors ranging from all shades of yellow, crimson, purple, green and white. Speckled petals, dotted petals and even flowers with stripes. Flowers, in general, symbolize love, and there can be no greater gift than an orchid for Valentine’s Day.”
Pat Bliss, show co-chair, said, “The show provides a marvelous opportunity not only to see these awesome flowers — some as little as one-half inch — but also to learn about the world’s largest and most diverse species of plants. You can see how you can easily grow these blooms and develop a stimulating hobby.”
Orchid experts will give free lectures on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. On Sunday, free lectures will be given at 10:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Private guided tours will be available and must be arranged ahead of time.
Deep Cut Orchid Society meets on the second Tuesday of every month at the Monmouth Reform Temple, 332 Hance Ave., Tinton Falls, at 7:30 p.m. An orchid expert gives a presentation, members bring in special blooms, and refreshments are served. There is no charge to attend.
